MANILA, Philippines--The recent oil price hike has got transport groups clamoring for higher minimum fares, including bus and taxi groups that had waived fare hikes in previous years.

The Land Transportation Franchise and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) said that it is consolidating several petitions for fare increases.

LTFRB Chairperson Thompson Lantion said in an interview that jeepney groups want up to P9 minimum fare after settling for a fare restoration to P7.50 last year. They rolled back the minimum fare to P7 in December 2005, when oil prices stabilized.

Bus operators, meanwhile, are asking for a 20-percent increase in the minimum fare, said Homer Mercado, president of the Provincial Bus Operators Associations of the Philippines (PBOAP).

The current minimum fare is P8 for regular buses and P10 for air-conditioned buses.

Taxis, on the other hand, want the flag down rate at P40 from the current P30. Philippine National Taxi Operators Association Inc. (PNTOA) president Bong Suntay said the rate per additional kilometer of P2.50 will stay.

"This is long overdue. The last time we asked for an increase was 2003. We looked for alternative fuel to avoid feeling the pressure of world oil prices, and found LPG. But LPG is also pricier now. From P19 it has gone up to P30. We have no choice but to raise the flagdown rate," Suntay said.

PBOAP and PNTOA decided not to raise prices in mid-2007 despite oil prices surges.

The LTFRB will hear the petitions on jeepney and bus fares on Jan. 24. It had postponed the public hearing originally set for Jan. 10 while waiting for various groups to submit position papers on the matter.

The hearing on the taxi petition has not been set.

Lantion said the LTFRB had hoped that oil prices would not rise since this could make transport groups relent if the price of diesel remained at around P35 and gasoline stayed at around P38. "Of course we don't want commuters to pay unreasonably high rates but we understand the burden of high fuel costs on the transport sector. We will look for the best solution," Lantion said.
